The United Airlines Boeing 787 flight was en-route from Tel Aviv to Newark Liberty International Airport. As it approached its destination, the aircraft encountered extreme turbulence caused by windshear. The violent shaking left passengers feeling disoriented and nauseous. Some even reported chest pains due to the abrupt movements.
Amidst this chaotic situation, the pilot closely monitored the fuel levels. Realising that they were running dangerously low on fuel, the pilot made a critical decision. In a tense exchange with air traffic control, the pilot declared an emergency: “I’m declaring emergency right now. We’re min fuel. We just need to go direct.” Faced with the urgency of the situation, the flight was diverted to New York Stewart International Airport, approximately 75 miles upstate from Newark.
During the emergency landing, 22 passengers sustained injuries. Seven of them required hospitalisation for further evaluation, while the remaining 15 passengers received immediate on-site treatment. Thankfully, no severe injuries were reported, but the incident undoubtedly left passengers shaken.
United Airlines Flight 85 touched down safely at New York Stewart International Airport around 6:45 p.m. local time. The pilot’s swift response and the professionalism of the crew ensured the safety of everyone on board. Despite the unexpected detour, passengers expressed relief that the situation was handled effectively.
This incident serves as a stark reminder of the challenges faced by pilots and flight crews when navigating adverse weather conditions. Safety remains the top priority, and in this case, the pilot’s decision to divert prevented a potentially more serious outcome.
